The ElectroMud Orchestra
Released 13/04/2012

Lizzy Bradley: Bass
Connor Stanford: Drums
[Mark Bullock: Played drums on the E.P]
With all 5 tracks coming in at under 11 minutes in total ElectroMud clearly aren’t hanging around. This debut EP may be heavy on the distortion but it is fat free and is without doubt one of the best things I have heard from a new band in a very long time.
‘Tremble’ starts the EP with a riff that grunge kings the Melvins would be proud of. ElectroMud describe their style on Facebook as Sludge/Punk/Doom and ‘Sludge’ is about as perfect a description of this song as you could get. The drumming on this track, as throughout the EP, is excellent and the slightly ghostly backing vocals add a subtle contrast to the end of the song.
Fans of Matt’s previous band ‘The Subatomics’ will find much to like in the second offering here, ‘Dig Deep’. A relatively breezy guitar line and the vocal effect in the verse give a slightly dreamy (nightmare?) quality to the track before the bass and drums build together propelling the song to the end.
Track 3, ‘The Pyramid’ is reminiscent of Sonic Youth in one of their more reflective moments before they decide that a chunky distorted riff is the way forward. Another quality song.
After the mid paced ‘The Pyramid’ follows the fastest, and my favourite, track on the EP – ‘Return To Soil’. Think of the heaviest grunge bands, in particular Tad (no pun intended), and you should have a good idea what this track is like. The pace of the song is pretty unrelenting through its 131 seconds. The band really are excellent on this song -- the drums, guitar and bass all coming together brilliantly.
The final song ‘Oh Olivia’ is the longest here, at a massive 2 minutes 31 seconds, and is another highlight. More heavy riffing in the chorus pushes the track along and it even features some hand clapping over the guitar solo towards the end.
Special mention must also be made of the sound quality of the EP. The recording is first-rate and the mastering makes it stand up against many recordings in your collection. I played several other commercially available tracks after listening to this EP and it competed with all of them – a fine job done. Also, a minor point but one worth making, is that each track has its own specific picture tagged to the MP3. A small thing, obviously, but it shows the time and care taken with this release.
I have to say that I love this EP and I can’t recommend it enough if you are a fan of heavy Grunge(y) bands. Click on the Bandcamp page below where you can download the EP and check out the bands Facebook page.
