Review: It's My Party
Live, Dorset Speed, all decked out in their matching white jeans and white t-shirts are a blur of unpredictable energy. I image the bands main objective was to try and inject as much of that energy into these recordings as possible. To be fair to them, they have done an extremely decent job.
Lead off track ‘Officer Hotdog’ is, quite frankly, fuckin’ brilliant. A spiky guitar line runs through the song before building up to a fantastic shouty chorus where the bass and drums power the song along to another level completely. The back and forth vocals also work excellently in a totally infectious song. I can honestly say that this has been one of my favourite songs, of any band, since I first got an early version of it last year.
‘Shopping With Your Eyes Shut’ starts off at breakneck speed, spitting out its first 2 verses, and bridges, in about 25 seconds before it mutates into some kind of punky sludge fest. While the music may bring back a few memories of the Seattle scene of years gone by, the bands cries of ’It’s My Party’, ’Hotdog’ and ’Cool Dude’ distances them from the flannel wearing coffee drinkers by several thousand miles.
‘Angry Man Bee’ flies in at track number 3 and packs more punch and excitement in its 52 seconds than British boxing embarrassment Audley Harrison ever did. And with the vocals delivered in a slightly menacing style the song is more scary than that boxing berk as well.
‘Bye Bye Bentley’ is, at a whopping 2 minutes 55 seconds, the longest track delivered by the band. Another song that doesn’t waste any time in jumping from its intro into the verse and then launching two footed into the chorus. Prog rock this certainly is not.
‘Hot Deals’ rounds off the EP in typically frenetic fashion with the subject matter being the competition between a 99p shop and Pound World in Poole. Bizarre or a local view of social issues today? Doesn’t matter really because these guys could be singing about egg and chips (or more hotdogs) and you could happily shout along with them without caring what you were saying. Which in my view is the hallmark of a bloody good song.
So there you have it -- 5 brilliant songs weighing in at under 11 minutes. Perfect for those with short attention spans or anyone with an iPod that won’t hold its charge.
